Look at the "Axis"  concept for a "one stop" shopping approach for accessing the capabilities of the system and providing a centralized management service centre for supporting industry - education collaboration .

The recent SynerTech Conference organized jointly by the Alberta Research Council and the Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes brought together innovation stake holders from across the province to build awareness of each others capabilities and to strengthen the network of innovation resources.

Alberta's system of Colleges and Technical Institutes has recently come together to plan an integrated approach to supporting innovation.  As leading centres of business management and technology training, they are well place to assist in the process of technology commercialization. Several of them have established world class applied research facilities supporting important elements of Alberta's growing economy.

They have a presence within virtually ever urban and rural community and a well deserved reputation for providing timely and relevant assistance to their local small and medium sized businesses.  It is these innovators who play the vital role of adopting and adapting advanced technology to create new or improved products and services.

A Task Group was created last year to recommend to the Board Chairs and Presidents ways in which the our College and Technical Institute sytem can become an even better instrument for building high value businesses and  generating greater provincial wealth from Alberta's ongoing investment in advanced education and research.

The Colleges and Technical Institutes have now:
  • completed an inventory of capabilities within the system.
  • begun the advocacy process to make national and provincial governments more aware of the potential within the colleges and technical institutions to advance the innovation agenda.
  • undertaken with funding agencies to develop programs which will capture the unique capabilities of the colleges and technical institutes to assist technology transfer and commercialization.
