REDTEC hosted a lunch meeting of the Cypress Technology Network on  July 17th 2008.  Our featured speakers  were from the neighbouring city of Lethbridge who described to us the capabilities and R&D programs of the Alberta Terrestrial Imaging Center.  Their PowerPoint presentation is available on this link.
The Redcliff Technology Enterprise Centre welcomes its first commercial resident Canada West Biosciences which is currently developing technology for DRDC/S .  The Centre will support this compnay in its R&D program and assist it to grow by developing other defence, commercial and industrial clients for its specialized capabilities.

You have been directed to the Website of REDTEC INC.  which now hosts the Medicine Hat Innovators Network.  The latter was a three-year pilot project  sponsored by the Opportunity Capital Corporation and the Medicine Hat College to explore the needs and opportunities for a technology incubator service in Southeast Alberta.  The Medicine Hat Innovators Network  was conceived as "virtual incubator" providing services and networking opportunities through its Web site www.mhinnonet.com  and  the organization of a series of technical/management seminars.  The original Web site has been archived and includes Power Point versions of many of those seminars.

About REDTEC INC.

Out of this experience, REDTEC INC. was established in 2004 as a private company to develop and manage a local technology incubator operating under the aegis of the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta  as the Redcliff Technology Enterprise Centre.

The centre is now open to serve start-up engineering, science and technology based companies by providing:
  • office, meeting, laboratory and workshop facilities
  • administrative support - reception, shipping/receiving,
  • technical support
  • advice and referral, through local networks, to management training, investors, business mentoring, government programs
For more information email to
info@redtec.ca

The primary focus of the Centre is the commercialization of research and development products and services arising within the R&D activities of Defence Research and Development Canada at its nearby Suffield establisment DRDC/S.  In support of this objective DRDC/S is currently conducting research within part of the facilty  as described below.

North Lab Module DRDC "Little Dog" Testbed

North Lab Module

DRDC/S's Autonomous Intelligent Systems Section is currently resident in two of the Centres laboratories.  The photo on the left shows the North Lab with an installed VICON motion capture and analysis system and a Boston Dynamics "Little Dog" experimental robot.  Together, these systems provide a common testbed for networked researchers developing self-learning algorithims for the guidance of autonomous "legged robots" able to traverse irregular and unstructured terrain.  This research network is under the sponsorship of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

A video presentation showing Little Dog's reaction to force control is available on this link.

Within the Centre Lab module, another group in the Section is  developing more immediate robotic applications.  Pictured on the right is one of several small "counter-mining 'bots" to be used by Military Engineers to neutralize roadside Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) without the operators needing to dismount from the protection of their armoured vehicles.

South Lab - Currently Under Fitting Out

South Lab Module

The South module is now occupied by a research team from Canada West Biosciences currently working under contract to DRDC/S.  The company is investigating the use of gene probes in the detection and identification of biological threat agents.  This approach to biological defence provides a selectivity that not only can pick out a threat organism but can differentiate among its varients, natural or man made.

The company's REDTEC laboratory is now equipped to process samples based on Affymetrix microarray technology.  The team has designed its  first GeneChip(Registered Trade Mark) specifically  tailored to biological agents of interest to DRDC/S and is now awaiting its fabrication before undertaken a series of experiments to validate the effectiveness of this novel approach.

The company plans to extend its technology to industrial applications and to become an important Alberta resource for environmental monitoring and compliance.

Mezannine Open Office Modules and Conference Room

The upper mezzanine of the facility comprises a fully equipped conference room and two open office modules each providing five individual workstations.

The facility is served with high speed internet via the wireless service of our ISP Canopy Canada (now Platinum Communications) and internet service is distributed within the facilty by an internal wireless network.  Telephone service is currently consists of two Platinum Communications VOIP lines provided which provides residents with unlimited North American calling.

The Conference Room, has a whiteboard and data projector.  Through an available Webtrain service, an internet-based teleconferencing network can be set up to include anyone at home or office who has a reasonably fast internet connection.

High Bay Assembly Area

The High Bay Asembly Area provides common area space for residents to work on large mechanical projects and the area is sized to support systems such as the Meggitt Barracuda Unmanned Marine Vehicle.
